Home Remedies for Gingivitis
September 6, 2024
Did you know that it’s not normal for your gums to bleed easily when brushing or flossing? Red, swollen, and bleeding gums are signs of gingivitis, which is the first stage of gum disease. With no treatment, gingivitis can lead to tooth loss and affect your general wellness negatively. Thankfully, gingivitis is easy to treat. Here are a few simple home remedies to restore your gum health.
What is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is caused by bacteria in plaque and tartar buildup, most often caused by poor oral hygiene. The gums become inflamed and irritated. They can become sensitive and bleed easily. You may also experience chronic bad breath or a poor taste in your mouth.
If gingivitis isn’t treated, the infection will destroy the supporting structures of your teeth, including your jawbone. Over time, your teeth can loosen and fall out. Advanced gum disease is also known to increase your risk of several health issues, including Alzheimer’s, heart disease, and diabetes.
Tips to Treat Gingivitis Naturally
If you notice changes to your gum health, don’t wait to take action. Here are a few tips to treat gingivitis at home:
- Brush Your Teeth Twice Daily: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to brush your teeth for 2 minutes at least twice a day, if not after every meal.
- Floss Every Day: Your toothbrush can’t reach everywhere in your mouth, leaving up to 40% of your teeth surfaces unclean. Daily flossing is the only way to remove the buildup missed when brushing. Flossing is the best way to prevent gum disease.
- Replace Your Toothbrush Regularly: Your toothbrush should be replaced every 2 or 3 months, or when the bristles are worn. Frayed or damaged toothbrushes will not clean your teeth effectively.
- Rinse with Salt Water: Rinse your mouth with salt water to kill bacteria. It will also reduce inflammation.
- Avoid Tobacco: Smoking increases your risk of gum disease and can make the infection more difficult to treat.
- Moderate Alcohol: Alcohol can affect your body’s immune system, making you more prone to infections.
Contact Your Dentist
Gingivitis is nothing to ignore. Contact your dentist to schedule an appointment. They will assess your gum health to determine if you require any additional treatments. With the care of your dentist and changes to your oral hygiene at home, you can reverse the effects of gingivitis to keep your mouth and body healthy.
